In November 2023, destructive floods devastated communities and infrastructure in South West and Jubaland States.
Its effects were far-reaching, causing mass displacements of people and widespread damage. A lack of shelter, insufficient food, clean drinking water, and an acute shortage of hygiene supplies posed a significant risk, increasing the likelihood of serious waterborne diseases and malnutrition among the affected population.
The Gift of the Givers acted promptly, dispatching teams to assess the situation on the ground and offer a helping hand.
SEARCH AND RESCUE
A significant number of individuals were isolated due to the high floodwater, necessitating the use of boat rescues. After assessing the needs on the ground, additional consumables like tents, blankets and food were procured.
FEEDING
Gift of the Givers feeding centres in Somalia remain a lifeline for those displaced by drought and floods. These centres offer three meals a day, ensuring that vulnerable families have access to essential nutrition during challenging times. This daily sustenance ensures that vulnerable families have access to essential nutritional foods during times of need.
HOUSING
When hundreds of displaced people lost all their personal belongings as well as their dwellings in the destructive flood, the Gift of the Givers served as a beacon of hope. The foundation launched a housing construction project aimed at assisting the needy, particularly orphans and internally displaced people. This initiative is designed to offer shelter and assistance to vulnerable communities in the region.
WATER
Providing safe and clean drinking water was one of the priorities when assisting flood displaced people. Utilizing resources such as mobile water tanks, alongside water circulation facilities, ensured that the water supply was clean and safe for consumption. This effort aims to mitigate the risk of water-borne diseases and other relevant health concerns among the affected population.
