Vibrating in Dominguillo, Colombia's 3rd SOLELab

Vibrating in Dominguillo with the Third SOLE Lab in Colombia

A Big Question takes us to places we never imagined, like today. The story we tell here also began with a Big Question. In 2023, we connected for the first time with the vibrant Dominguillo community through USAID and IOM’s Hilando Vidas y Esperanza program.

With the question Why is the art of dancing called Juga or Fuga?, Dominguillo experienced their first SOLE, exploring a mystery woven into phonetics and local traditions. Through SOLE, we uncovered its profound meaning.

We learned that, during colonial enslavement, Afro-descendant ancestors planned their escapes through dance. These fugas were more than dance; they were pathways to freedom, encoded in rhythms and steps, in the braids and hidden maps within the hair of their women. These fugas became moments of escape, resistance, and hope.

We also found that juga alludes to play, to the joy rooted in the Caucano violin, the cane flute, the triangle, the drum, the charrasca, and the mate. This dance becomes a celebration, where intricate steps amuse and confuse, and play becomes cultural resistance.

For a year, profound questions like this allowed Self-Organized Learning and deep friendship to flourish. A bond so strong that today we are united in building Colombia’s third SOLE Lab, adding another piece to our Library of the Future.

In partnership with Casa Nido and its environmental approach, integrating Bio-Construction, Urban Agriculture, Art, and well-being, we’ve built the collective space we had imagined: a place for everyone to create, connect, and SOLE together.

Dominguillo is pure joy, music, clapping, and rhythm. An Afro community in the heart of the Cauca mountains, filled with radiant faces and sovereign hearts, proud of their roots and traditions.

Your spirit is part of this too. Together, we’ve built three SOLE Labs: in La Guajira, El Tambo, and Dominguillo. With you, wherever you are reading this, we’re creating the Library of the Future together.

Thank you for being part of this journey!
