STORY of ASHIYA
Ashiya, a girl from Delhi Nala Par Camp, is a student in 12th grade. Six members of her family, her parents and four siblings, migrated from Bihar. Her father works as an auto mechanic. She has been associated with Sukarya NGO for the last nine months, enjoying working with the NGO as it helps her to be aware of social issues and challenges for girls and women. She feels empowered when girls from the communities bring their problems to her and she has a chance to solve them. She conducts regular sessions with adolescent girls in her community and sensitizes them about various social issues like eating nutritious food regularly, taking care of menstrual hygiene, safe and unsafe touching, and being aware of intentional flirting. She is inspired by seeing the growth in their leadership ability to fight these problems. She realizes the importance of this program as a wake-up call for these girls as she has witnessed many girls in her community are still victims of gender discrimination caused by their own families as their enemies. This society often considers them a burden on the family. But since she is associated with Sukarya, she feels empowered to help them be aware of their rights. The discrimination that exists for centuries in India should end now, she believes, including any kind of discrimination, whether it is based on religion, caste, or gender. She always reminds herself of the oath she has taken to work for such discrimination to end, being eliminated from her community at any cost. Be it a boy, a girl, or any third gender; they should be accepted by society as they are with their rights. She is thankful to Sukarya NGO and Gender Equality Project-Delhi for helping her clear her doubts and decide on personal and social goals.
A brief overview of what we did during
September - November 2022
The Gender Equality program for adolescent girls is a unique project. The vision of the program is to achieve gender equality by promoting adolescent health, reproductive rights, and sexual health and building their knowledge and skills to develop their qualities, capacities, leadership skills, and attitudes to lead a successful life and become an “agent of change” in the society.
The project runs in both verticals of nine slum communities and government schools.
After identifying the areas, surveying the adolescent girls, and conducting a meeting with health workers, Asha workers, and local NGOs in the following slum communities where we completed training with five batches, and we formed five new batches of 50 adolescent girls from the following locations in the community for training with them:-
