Our skilling the women project hasn’t been active this year due to limited funding, as an organization we working to see that we get new donors on board come year 2024.
However, we have some stories of women who have been impacted by the project. Specifically, the ones that attended the last class, which was there in 2022,
When Sarah Joined TOL in 2021, she was desperate to treat her daughter who had a health issue with his heart. Sarah didn’t have enough money to feed her family. Sarah used to send Her 6-year-old daughter to place on the roadside to sell bananas and their capital was equivalent to $3 as she tended her sick daughter. As the project, we supported Sarah in taking her son to Mulago referral hospital and invited her to join the class which was class 2022 which she gladly joined because she wanted to change her life.
Right now, rents her own space and her machine. She earns like $7 per day if she fixes people’s clothes and from making uniforms and bags she can earn like$15 per day. To a woman in the slum, this improvement is considered huge. She is so positive that 2024 is going to be a better year for her and hopefully for her to have her children go to school.
Nalongo is another woman who has been impacted by the Skilling the women project, she started her workshop that has supported her children through school. Nalongo’s projects can earn her about $50 per client, for her she works for schools, individual customers, and those referred to her by satisfied customers. All her six children are in school, and she is In the position to feed them.
It is stories like these that keep on pushing us to continue supporting women in the slum because we know that once a mother’s lifestyle is changed, their children’s change as well.
