With our local partner, the Organization for Women's Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), we're helping women and their families flee areas formerly controlled by and recently liberated from ISIS and reach shelters where they receive medical care and other life-saving supplies, shelters that you make possible.
Recently, Nadia* and her three daughters escaped ISIS territory, but it was not easy. It took three tries for them to succeed. On a previous escape attempt, Nadia was captured and tortured, making it difficult for her to walk.
Once she reached OWFI's shelter with the help of her daughters, they ensured that Nadia received the medical attention she needed in order to heal. OWFI staff stayed with her at the shelter to take care of her, and then took her to a hospital as soon as they could. A staff member stayed with her throughout her month-long hospital stay to provide her comfort and monitor her situation.
While Nadia was in the hospital, OWFI ensured that her daughters were safe with another family member, and reunited them after Nadia could leave the hospital. Thanks to your support, Nadia can walk again and has gone back to work at a school so she can support herself and her daughters. Thanks to OWFI’s shelter and dedicated staff, Nadia and her family are well and living a safer life.
