OWFI Leads in Iraq

By MADRE | MADRE

Thanks to your generous support, MADRE partners with the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI) to meet the urgent needs of marginalized women by operating a network of shelters, developing and implementing innovative anti-violence, protection, and political empowerment strategies, and advocating on behalf of communities at local, national, and international levels.

OWFI provides life-sustaining protection to women and girl survivors and those at risk of gender-based violence including rape, domestic violence, trafficking, and other forms of abuse at the hands of ISIS, tribes, militias, and family members. Through OWFI’s holistic model, individuals emerge from victimization to become powerful agents of change and leaders in their shared mission to advance women’s rights in Iraq.

In 2023, OWFI operated just one clandestine women’s shelter in Baghdad, constantly threatened with closure by the Iraqi Government. OWFI has since acquired legitimacy as a principal provider of shelter in Iraq, obtaining agreements with local governorates permitting shelter activities, and even receiving referrals from Iraqi security forces, local authorities, and Iraqi and foreign government agencies. Today, OWFI runs a network of shelters and safe houses that span Iraq, offering a critical safe haven and support to survivors and at-risk Iraqis. OWFI’s support further extends beyond immediate protection to providing psychosocial support, vocational training, family mediation, and feminist education. OWFI uplifts the leadership of women and local communities for the long term by building individuals’ skills, confidence, and self-worth and transforming harmful community norms around women’s rights.

OWFI is best situated to identify, articulate, and meet the needs of Iraqi women and girls because of their first-hand understanding of local conditions. As community members themselves, OWFI staff members have established trust, enabling safe and transparent dialogue around issues facing women, girls, and other marginalized groups, and allowing for the development of truly ground-up approaches to promote change, even under the most high-risk circumstances. Additionally, OWFI is a leader among Iraqi civil society organizations in strengthening ground-up, intersectional approaches to confronting violence, division, and extremism in Iraq.

Thank you for helping MADRE continue to support locally led organizations likeOWFI; grounded in mutual trust, collaborative learning, and consistent communication.
