African women face numerous social, political, and economic barriers. The 'She is Empowered (ShE)' initiative aims to dismantle these barriers by providing a platform for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) to challenge societal norms through skills development and network-building. This initiative empowers ShE Leaders to become catalysts for positive change in their communities, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable future.
In the words of Audre Lorde, 'There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle, because we do not live single-issue lives.' African women and girls face numerous barriers, including limited access to education due to factors like poverty and cultural norms, leading to high dropout rates. Economic constraints hinder their ability to access resources and start businesses. Discrimination in employment restricts their career opportunities, and gender-based violence threatens their well-being.
ShE provides African adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) with a transformative 12-month online program, empowering them to actively participate in their communities' economic and social development. Through modules covering youth advocacy, social entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and a practical community engagement project, ShE's vision extends beyond education, aiming to cultivate a generation of empowered women who will shape Africa's future with resilience and determination.
The long-term impact of the ShE program lies in its ability to empower each participant and impact up to 1,000 community beneficiaries each year. Through the implementation of Community Engagement Projects, ShE Leaders address pressing challenges through principles of gender equality, community development, and sustainable impact. They serve as catalysts for equitable futures in Africa by leading projects that tackle social issues such as literacy, menstrual health awareness drives, and more.
