Team meeting

Balsena, independent children’s collective is now officially adult and out of their teen year when they completed 19 years this year

Through Balsena, our quest to search the true meaning of childhood continues and Balsena continues to improve situation of child rights. Currently, Balsena is working in 21 communities and 11 schools in Bhavnagar. More than 1200 children are part of Balsena currently.

One Day Training:

During these months, two one day trainings were organized on the theme of child rights. Children learnt in detail about right to survival, right to development, right to protection from discrimination and abuse, and right to participation. They learnt these rights through different games and activities. Children learnt to connect their learning of their rights to their own life.

Celebration of days:

Balsena children celebrated Makar Sankranti by cooking together and eating together in their points. Balsena children also celebrated Republic Day of India on 26th January. They found out importance of the republic day and shared with others, some prepared speeches and delivered them and some did drawings.

Balmela:

We organized 2 Balmelas for younger children with theme of Having fun with Mathematics. More than 120 children took part in these Balmelas. Children were able to understand basic concepts of math with fun and without any pressure. Age and level appropriate activities were designed. Concepts like basic numbers, addition, subtractions, multiplication, division, logic, fractions, vedic math, math puzzles, etc. were covered in these Balmelas. Children participated in this Balmela quite enthusiastically.

Exposure Visit:

Exposure visits are organized with intention of children gaining different perspectives and gaining information and knowledge about important public places and institutes. Children visited Fire Brigade and gathered information about their work, they also understood important fire safety and tips. Children also visited blood bank and understood about their work and importance of blood donation. After gaining knowledge about these places, children also shared about their work with others in their area.

Balsena Elections:

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we could not do Balsena annual elections of council and presidents and vice president from past one and half year. The council and president and vice president who were elected before COVID, beautifully handled their responsibility for longer time even with various challenges of the pandemic and proved to be inspiring leaders.

With ease in restrictions, Balsena children elected new council in their communities and schools. New council also met for a residential camp for election of new president and vice president of Balsena. During the first day of the camp, activities on different models of governance were facilitated. From these activities, children understood importance of democracy and sociocracy. Through other activities, children also came up with qualities of good leader, and reflected on their own qualities. They came up with the qualities they each have personally and qualities that they would like to work on during the upcoming year as leaders. They also understood about importance of being active citizen in democracy through a play. Finally, they elected president and Vice president of Balsena. Yashpal was elected as a president and Ravi and Ankita were elected as vice presidents of Balsena.

Balika Mela:

Balika mela was organized with girls of age group 6-10 years. The theme was gender and gender equality as well as physical, mental, emotional changes that are happening with them and will happen in near future as well. Girls also shared some of the challenges they are facing regarding this and found solutions for the same.

Kishori Mela:

For older girls of age 11-15, we organized Kishori Mela. In this mela, topics such as menstruation and menstrual hygiene, physical, mental, emotional changes during puberty, attractions, etc. were covered so that these adolescent girls understand the changes happening within them instead of being confused or scared. During these mela, girls asked and clarified many doubts, confusions and questions.

Mata Samelan:

On the occasion of Women’s day we organized a gathering of mothers of Balsena children. Topics such as women empowerment and women’s rights were discussed. We also discussed about our adolescent girls’ groups and Wenlido- self-defense trainings. More than 75 women attended this gathering.

Meeting of Council members and Active children:

Balsena’s council members organized their monthly meeting, where more than 112 children participated. Planning of upcoming year, vacation camp, programs organized by children, etc. were discussed. Children also discussed about work of different Samitis ( Committees like sports, culture, education, protection, environment, etc. ) and their work as well as planning. Facilitators also presented their work plan for the upcoming year.

Council children also discussed about different challenges that they face in their team and communities and solutions for the same.
