Justice Has Been Served!

By Sarah Seltz | Development and Grants Manager

It’s been two years since the 9-year-old girl at one of Nyaka's primary schools was raped.  Today, justice has been served!  The man accused of the rape was found guilty by the High Court Judge and will be serving a ten-year jail sentence.  This might seem like a short sentence for such a heinous act, but many rape cases don’t even make it to court and the rapists are set free.  Thanks to YOU, this rapist was convicted and Nyaka is able to work towards ending sexual assault!

The girl (who will remain anonymous) has been doing well since the attack.  She has been given counseling and is checked on often by the Nyaka social worker.  She has remained in school and is determined to not have this attack dictate her future, she is a true survivor!  To prevent other children from being assaulted, staff and community members have been trained on how to influence attitudes about sexual assault, and work with local authorities to get justice for sexual assault survivors.  Community education will help change views about sexual assault and consent, which will prevent future assaults.

Thank you for the love you have shown this young survivor!
