YOU are changing attitudes about sexual assault in Uganda.
Over the last few months, Nyaka staff and teachers have had some training on how to deal with students who are victims of assault. Over the course of these sessions, we worked with them to help them overcome discomfort with discussing the issue openly to students. Sex is often presented as something completely forbidden and shameful, meaning that children who are facing sexual assault will not be empowered to report. We plan to work more with the staff so they can better communicate with students.
As we move forward, we plan to conduct consultations in homes and in Granny Group meetings with the help of the social worker. This will ensure that students have someone safe to talk to about any incidents in the future.
The process of changing attitudes and beliefs about sexual assault is slow and requires support from the community. Fortunately we have your partnership to keep the momentum going!
