QUALITY EDUCATION FOR DEPRIVED KIDS IN VENEZUELA

Cuando Hanthonyz era pequeño deambulaba por las escaleras de Petare, uno de
los sectores más desfavorecidos y con los mayores índices de violencia en
Caracas - Venezuela. Cada vez que discutía con su madre, se escapaba a un
callejón para dibujar cruces y flores en las paredes.

Sin un sólido apoyo familiar, su vecina, al verlo sin rumbo, lo inscribió
en el Colegio Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga para alejarlo de los peligros del
barrio. Cuando cruzó por primera vez las puertas del plantel ya tenía 8
años.

Educar a Hanthonyz requirió de mucho esfuerzo debido a su fuerte
temperamento. Con paciencia, Truusje, una artista belga residenciada en
Venezuela que trabajó voluntariamente en el Jenaro Aguirre como profesora
de arte, descubrió en él increíbles capacidades artísticas.

El taller de arte reemplazó un callejón y se tornó en el refugio de este
pequeño, el gran lienzo que daría color a su vida.

Pasaron los años y Hanthonyz, junto a 40 compañeros de su promoción, se
convirtió en un adolescente que se graduó de primaria luego de muchas
dificultades familiares. Con el mundo por delante, quiso prepararse como
carpintero, pero tuvo que abandonar su sueño para trabajar.

Un día la Madre María Luisa, fundadora del Jenaro Aguirre, le propuso que
volviera al colegio para que ayudara como auxiliar de 6to grado. Ella sabía
que a él le gustaba enseñar.

Unos meses más tarde, Hanthonyz encontró una nueva oportunidad para
combinar su talento artístico con la satisfacción de la enseñanza: un
puesto como "Facilitador de Arte": “Para mí es muy gratificante ver la
sonrisa de un niño cuando le enseño algo que le gusta”, comenta Hanthonyz.
“Algunos me dicen que también quieren aprender a hacer magia con sus manos”.

Fue así como las puertas del taller se abrieron nuevamente para Hanthonyz,
donde ahora crea obras que ayudan a formar en arte y teatro a más de 400
estudiantes de inicial y primaria, quienes también necesitan descubrir su
camino entre los bloques de Petare.

Hoy día Hanthonyz continúa con sus estudios de bachillerato para luego
graduarse de publicidad. Quienes lo conocen se contagian con su entusiasmo,
su derroche de creatividad, su energía arrolladora. “Me gusta ayudar a mis
alumnos a expresar su propio talento… eso sí, les digo que lo tienen que
hacer con cariño”.

Esta historia es una de las muchas que se han paseado durante 20 años por
los pasillos del Colegio Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga, gracias al apoyo y la
colaboración de quienes creen en el poder de la educación para salvar vidas
y florecer sueños por más inalcanzables que parezcan.

When Hanthonyz was a small boy, he would run through the stairways of
Petare, one of the poorest and crime-ridden slums in Caracas-Venezuela.
Every time he had a fight with his mother, he would run away to the alley
to draw crosses and flowers on the walls.

One of his neighbors, concerned about his lack of family support, enrolled
Hanthonyz in the Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga School to steer him away from the
dangers of the slum. He was eight years old when he first crossed the doors
of the school.

Teaching Hanthonyz was a hard task due to his strong character. With
patience, Truusje, a Belgian artist living in Venezuela who volunteer as an
art professor for many years, discovered in him incredible artistic talents.

The art workshop replaced the alley and became this small boy’s refuge, the
canvas that brought color to his life.

The years went by and Hanthonyz, along with his 40 classmates became
elementary school graduates, amid many family hardships. With the world at
his feet, he went on to train to become a carpenter. However, he had to
abandon this dream to find a job.

One day, Madre María Luisa, founder of Jenaro Aguirre, proposed to him to
return to the school to work as a Sixth Grade assistant. She knew he liked
to teach.

A few months later, Hanthonyz found a new opportunity to combine his
artistic talent with the satisfaction of teaching: a position as “Arts
Facilitator” at the school. “It is very gratifying to see a smile in a
child’s face when I teach him something he likes” says Hanthonyz. "Some
people tell me that they also want to learn how to do magic with their
hands.”

This is how the doors of the art workshop were opened again for Hanthonyz,
where he now creates works of art and helps to teach more than 400
elementary students in art and theatre. Students that like him, require
help to find their path along the blocks of Petare.

Nowadays, Hanthonyz is pursuing his high school diploma and he wants to
study advertising afterwards. Everybody who knows him is attracted by his
enthusiasm, his creativity and overwhelming energy “I like to help my
students express their own talent, and I tell them to do everything with a
lot of heart”.

This story is one of many that have been wandered the halls of the Jenaro
Aguirre Elorriaga school in the past 20 years, thanks to the support of
those that believe in the power of education to save lives and to achieve
dreams no matter how unattainable they may seem.
