My name is Alice L, a double honours student from University of Manchester in the UK, studying Politics and Spanish. As part of my year in Latin America, I volunteered to support the charitable work at Colegio Jenaro Aguirre (located in Petare, the biggest slum of Venezuela) for a month, during February 2023.

My duties included working with the doctors’ clinic and Aula Alternativa (Remedial classes). In the clinic I sat in with the general practitioners and with the gynaecologist as well. I learnt how to weigh and measure patients and for the children, how to determine which percentile they were in, relating to their height and weight. The doctors were incredibly welcoming and explained everything they were doing. With Doctor Veronica, I also learnt how to use a stethoscope and check the children’s ears and eyes. Getting to meet the patients was a great experience and learning about how the clinic works not just with members of the school, but also within the community. I also got to work with Doctor Luis N., the gynaecologist in the clinic. It was so interesting learning about how the echos work for the foetuses and I even got to learn how to do an echo, albeit with help.

The other main area where I helped out was in the Aula Alternativa (Remedial Classes), alongside the class teacher Veronica. I helped in calligraphy, maths and reading in their class. Veronica is an amazing teacher and I had so much fun working with the children. I was lucky enough to be there over February 14th where we did an exchange of lollipops and cards, being the day of love and friendship. We had a great time, and everyone wrote the sweetest letters to one another. I also got to participate with the NGO ‘Yo tengo un sueño’ when they came to give English lessons. I helped in the 2nd grade for this class, and it was great working with the kids on their English.

My observations about the school are that it is an incredible facility and foundation, which plays a crucial role , not just in the lives of the schoolchildren, but in the community more widely. The care for those involved and in attendance is amazing to see and to be a part of. In my experience of charitable work in other parts of the world, institutions such as this  have a far greater and beneficial impact than the already significant value that they add to those directly benefitting from the care and education provided . Of course, in my limited time there I am not able to talk in detail of how it all works but I would say that this place could not function without the dedication of the volunteers and employees who support visibly and behind the scenes, everything that goes on both within the building and as part of the various outreach programmes I know continue in the community.

Thank you for the incredible experience that this has been, to see the care, support, and life changing potential given to those who have little or nothing. I was honoured to be a part of it, and I urge everyone to give what you can either in time or money to continue to support this amazing programme.
