2023 sea turtle season is three months away!

Happy Earth Day!!   Getting ready for this season, the 2023 sea turtle conservation project!

The sea turtle conservation project in Punta Mala was paused in 2022. We received an e-mail from the administrator saying he would find somebody else to help with the sea turtle conservation program. This stopped our work for the season. Later the administrator of the wildlife reserve was removed by their superiors, and the authorities asked us to return to the area. However, the dreadful condition of the ranger station infrastructure prevented us from running the project.

2023's sea turtle season is coming soon, and we are preparing for it. Right now, a team of construction workers is working fast to rebuild the structure of the Punta Mala Wildlife Reserve ranger's station. We are excited to see how the new building will turn out. The funding is coming partly from a neighboring company and donations from GlobalGiving.

This infrastructure will provide shelter to park rangers, biologists, and volunteers from various organizations who will be able to help patrol the beach. Playa Hermosa-Punta Mala Wildlife Reserve stretches 13 km southeast along the Pacific from Hermosa's village to Esterillos Oeste's village. It encompasses wetlands, a small lagoon, a mangrove estuary, a rock reef, a tropical rain forest, and spectacular beaches with some of the best surf breaks in the world, especially in Playa Hermosa.

Mid-June will be our official start day. This area is vital to protecting the sea turtle population that nests yearly in Punta Mala and Playa Hermosa. These two beaches show an extraordinary amount of sea turtle activity.

In 2021, our biologists welcomed 35 volunteers so far this season, and together they've protected 166 Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea)  sea turtle nests from the threat of predation, erosion, and poaching. To provide a clean and secure place to incubate threatened nests, the team spent 29 days back-to-back digging and filtering the sand to build a new hatchery site with space for up to 276 nests. In addition, they patrolled the beach every night and walked hundreds of kilometers in the pitch dark, looking for turtles, tracks, and nests.

They've even rescued two adult turtles trapped in rocky pools after the tide had gone out!

Thanks to the efforts of the volunteers, these Olive Ridley Sea turtles have been given a haven to come and nest, and 10720 baby turtles have already been safely released into the sea, with an eclosion success of 85%.

2023 will be a great year to protect sea turtles, we are so thrilled for the potential this 2023 brings!  Thank you for supporting us and making this possible.
