We've been busy in Tanzania improving education with Technology since our last update.
Girls at the FGM Safe House in Mugumu have been having weekly English conversation lessons with teachers in London, via their internet connection. After a few teething problems, mostly down to power cuts and the girls shyness, this is working really well and the teachers are able to share their screen, show videos and listen clearly to the girls.
The progress they are making is astounding, both in English and in self confidence. Elizabeth says "since we started these video lessons I have learnt so much. Now I feel confident in speaking. We love learning more about England and always laugh a lot!" We are planning to develop this to allow live streaming of certain classes and other events all over the world.
We have also been using technology to protect girls in this area who are most at risk of FGM by better mapping their villages into openstreetmap. Anyone with internet access can get involved here. I spoke about this programme at the State of the Map conference in Brussels last week and you can see more details here.
In sadder news, some of the schools we support near Bukoba, were severely damaged in last months' earthquake. We are assessing the situation and I will be visiting them next month.
Thank you again for your generous support - your money really does go a very long way in rural Tanzania..
