Dear Friends--
I met Anxhela when I visited Albania last June. She was the only girl of four Nehemiah Gateway students selected for a special, developmental trip to Germany to learn about business and meet NG donors and friends She stood out because she spoke so little, compared to her three fellow students, who were bursting with confidence and eager to talk. She quietly mentioned helping out with her family business, but clearly preferred to listen to the others.
It wasn't until later, when I spoke with one of Anxhela's professors, that I learned just what "helped out with the family business" actually meant. Anxhela's family has owned and run the restaurant "Qafë-Plloçë", on the road between Pogradec and Korçë, since 1993, growing from a small cafe to a combination restaurant/hotel, noted for their dried meats. As part of her coursework at NGU, Anxhela focused on modernizing business practices and processes at the restaurant. She especially focused on marketing, managing social media for the restaurant and translating the updated menu into different languages.
As a result of Anxhela's knowledge and leadership, the restaurant has undergone a bit of a renaissance, with a jump in foreign visitors and significantly increased revenues. Successful businesses like this one strengthen the Pogradec community, and help it to become an ever more appealing destination.
Near and far, our students and alumni are making a difference in their communities. Your support is building this group of talented young people, and helping them to learn from their instructors and from one another.
All the best,
Sarah
