The lockdown as a result of COVID 19 in Uganda, has left HIV+ children grimly affected by creating a gap within their communities. They were no longer able to receive their medication in time and as well as basic foodstuff which is meant to supplement the drugs, thus compromising the effectiveness of their treatment. The prevailing situation has left many of the children on the bridge of starvation, hardly having a meal a day. This exposes them to treatment failure and increased viral load which may see more deaths even after the pandemic.
Mityana is a district in the central region of Uganda. It is bordered by Kiboga District to the North, Nakaseke District to the Northeast, Wakiso District to the East, Mubende District to the West, Mpigi District to the Southeast, Butambala and Gomba Districts to the South. Mityana is a district in Uganda. It has 9 sub-counties, 59 parishes, and 714 villages.
For a greater impact, PaCT identified Butayunja in which we were already implementing other similar projects and liaised with the District Health Officer of Mityana, Mityana Regional Referral HIV, as well as Kitongo Health Center III HIV Children’s Caretaker (Dispenser at the ART Facility) who helped us identify those children living positively and are more disadvantaged than others.
Because of our limited resource envelope, 50 (out of 113) HIV positive children from Butayunja Sub County were identified and will be provided with the essential basic nutritious foods including 10kgs of Maize Flour, 5kgs of Beans, 5kgs of Rice, 1 kg of silverfish (Mukene) and we anticipate that these foodstuffs can last them at least a month.
