New arrivals

By Zoe Walker | Director

The newest arrival at Wildtracks
The newest arrival at Wildtracks

Our Manatee Intensive Care Unit has been empty since the arrival of Teek in 2020 but that has now changed with the arrival yesterday evening of a new manatee calf… an unfortunate indicator that the tourism boat traffic in the Belize City area is increasing again, with the associated effects of high manatee mortality and an increasing number of orphaned calves.

Be the first to meet the newest intake at Wildtracks – a female calf estimated at around 2 weeks old, rescued by the Clearwater Aquarium team near Belize City, and transferred directly to Belize's National Manatee Rehabilitation Centre at Wildtracks. We are now on 24-hour monitoing to ensure this little being has as good a chance as possible of pulling through.

She may be the newest arrival, but we are also celebrating near-departures as well, as we prepare to attach the final trackers for the release of Chikki, Callie, Sandy and Hope. All four manatees are ready to transition to the wild - but we will be tracking them to make sure that transition is as easy and trouble free as possible.

On the manatee downside, a recent storm event has destabilized the Lagoon Enclosure wall, so we have had to move the two younger manatees, Teek and Nugget, to one of the large pools as we search for funds to rebuild the wall. These two manatees are now HUGE! It is only when it takes the whole Wildtracks Team to catch and lift them that we realize how much they have grown since their arrival as young calves!

As you know from previous reports, intensive care is an area that we have been strengthening for the Primate Rehabilitation Centre as well, with the purchase of a mobile intensive care unit for the transport of critical care neonate howler monkeys and a second, full size intensive care unit for the Primate Nursery…this has been possible largely because of your donations as part of the 1:1 US$5,000 appeal…together we are making a difference to the lives of these endagered species!!

Each year the Belize Forest Department also sends us rescued or confiscated infant coatis, raccoons, squirrels, peccaries and deer, all of which need special care when they come in. We have been incredibly fortunate in that an anonymous donor has funded a new building for the rehab species that lie outside the Primate and Manatee Rehabilitation Programmes!! The building is now nearing completion, with electricity and water connections going in today. It, too, has its own new incubator, as well as a food prep, sink and clean up area! It may be small, but it is beautiful!

We are preparing for the next spider and howler monkey releases this coming month, with the Tracking Team down at Fireburn checking the pre-release enclosures to ensure everything is in place before we fit the satellite trackers on the spider monkeys and take them down to the release site.

Your donation has contributed to so many successes as we move forward!

Thank you!

Zoe
