The community rangers got a kayak to monitor their reserve!
The fisherpeople of Vilankulo know the bayscape like famers know their country roads. So they decided the protected area didn't need to be demarcated with bouys. Now with a kayak, the elected and trained rangers are equiped to reach the reserve quickly to make sure no one is there fishing or catching seahorses.
Next, we are looking into adding a coral nursery to the reserve - our PADI trained local staff will be heading out on dives with marine science advisors over the coming months to investigate.
We invite you to learn more about how ParCo helps local people find solutions to environmental and social challenges by visiting our website. In addition to seahorse protection, our programs include health rights, preschool education, school access for orphans, circular economy solutions (beach cleanup and plastic recovery), sunscreen for children with alibinism, fairtrade tourism CSR partnerships and more.
Thank you for helping us protect the seahorses of Vilankulo, Mozambique by promoting local marine management, eco-tourism and conservation science.
Please donate again if you can, and share this campaign to give your friends a chance to support our ongoing efforts!
In The News: In case you missed it, our story was shared by the IUCN Seahorse, Pipefish and Seadragon Specialist Group in January of this year.
