STRAY ANIMAL FOUNDATION OF INDIA YEAR-END REPORT
FOUNDER'S MESSAGE
I m born and raised in India. Like many Indians, I grew up immune to the suffering of the nation’s stray animals. It was only after moving to the US, on a trip to Hyderabad, I saw the heartbreaking condition of the city’s strays. The historic and beautiful city, Hyderabad is not without its challenges. While the human cost of these conditions is obvious, the tragedy for India’s stray animals is often unnoticed; a lack of infrastructure and lingering cultural prejudices often means that sick, hungry and injured animals go without the food, care and refuge they need to survive. I soon realized that the solution would not could not come from India’s overstressed shelter and animal welfare network taking in more animals but must arise from a change in Indian society. - UJWALA. MOM OF 2 AND FULL-TIME IT ENGINEER
INDIA SHELTER MANAGER'S MESSAGE
I m founder of India's NGO and shelter manager. I m 23 years old. I always loved animals and I never backed helping an animal in need despite my financial constraints. In 2019, I embarked on a journey of animal rescue when I rescued a puppy from the streets and after getting her treated, I became so attached that I ended up adopting her. This experience opened up a new world for me, as I began seeing the severe abuse and neglect that many animals suffer daily. So I started Breath Animal Rescue. We care for sick, injured, and elderly animals with nowhere else to go. We give them the love and attention they need to heal physically and emotionally. It's been the most rewarding journey of my life.
I founded Breathe Animal Rescue home to provide animals with better lives. Every day, I encounter animals in need and it is incredibly rewarding to be able to help them.

WHO ARE WE
SAFI is a USA based 501(c)3 charitable organization founded by Ujwala Chintala in Florida, USA to fight for India’s animals. We are shelter and foster focused, working to build a strong, compassionate animal welfare network in Hyderabad, India, providing shelter infrastructure, vet care, supplies, guidance, resources, education, and manpower. HYDERABAD, INDIA Although a historic and beautiful city, Hyderabad is not without its challenges. The streets of Hyderabad force India’s stray animals to contend with temperatures up to 115 degrees, scarce food, and rampant abuse. We’ve built relationships with volunteers and animal welfare workers on the front lines to bring rescue crews, food, medical care, and training to India’s neglected dogs, cats, and livestock.
OUR HISTORY
2014 Founder Ujwala experienced abuse of street animals in India in her trip.
2016 Ujwala's daughter has always wanted a dog. Instead of adopting, she decided to foster dogs from rural shelters in Florida, USA.
2020 Determined to make a difference in Indian street animal lives, Ujwala decided to start an organization dedicated to helping these animals.
2020 Lockdown feeding, Rescue, vaccinations, adoptions, release & Sterilizations started.
2021 A 1/4the acre shelter W 25 kennels, 4 indoor rooms and a container home is built to accommodate 50 dogs. 3 Indian street dogs travelled to USA for adoption. All found forever homes.
2022 1/2th acre extended to shelter. Large sanctuary, puppy & senior sections, disease isolation area, clinic, cow area, sterilization kennels, recovery room etc
2022 Veterinary, Cruelty and adoption departments added.
WHAT WE DO
SAFI was founded in 2020 with the goal of providing a safe haven for animals. In just 2 1/2 years, we have grown from a small foster home to a shelter and sanctuary with 120 Dogs, cats, cows, buffaloes and goats. SAFI is staffed with an onsite Veterinarian, two veterinary technicians, and 14 more staff members. SAFI provides first-class care for animals in need, and our team is dedicated to providing the best possible care for each and every animal.
SAFI PROGRAMS
RESCUE & REHABILITATION On average SAFI rescues 50 dogs and cats a month. We want to be the change India’s innocent lives desperately deserve and need. To date we rescued around 600 animals.
SANCTUARY When animals cannot survive on the streets or find adoptive homes, we’ve got a place for them. Animals in sanctuary require highly specific care and space. At a given time we have about 40 disabled and senior permanent residents.
SPAY & NEUTER SAFI sterilizes over 50 dogs & cats a month. Population control surgeries for animals is critical for stressed populations. To date we sterilized over 800 dogs and cats.
ADOPTIONS / RELEASES The RRSR (Rescue, Rehabilitate, Sterilize and Adopt/Release) model allows for us to care for the maximum amount of animals. We adopted and released around 500 dogs and cats.
EDUCATION & CRUELTY India’s animals face a culture of extreme abuse. We’re working to change that. One of SAFI’s main goals is to change the public opinion of many Indians who find street animals disgusting. We counseled and pursued legal cases against 300 cases.

RABIES FREE INDIA VACCINATION DRIVE
According to WHO, “India is endemic for rabies” and “accounts for 36% of the world’s deaths”. Eliminating rabies requires vaccinating and sterilizing the stray dog population. Rabies is 99% Fatal and 100% Preventable through vaccination.
For World Rabies day, SAFI vaccinated 1000 street dogs. The vaccination drive not only focuses on dogs health but human health as well. Each of our two teams has one dog catcher, a vaccinator, a record keeper, and someone to apply paint to the dog once it is vaccinated so we do not vaccinate the same dog twice. We record how many dogs are vaccinated per area and if they have been spay/neuter or not. The goal is to hit a minimum of 70% of the dogs in each area. 70% is the number needed to eradicate rabies. Aadi is our rescued cow who was hit by a vehicle and left lying on busy streets. His hernia couldn't be fixed, so he is now a permanent resident. We believe he was probably a byproduct of the dairy industry.
GOSHALA OPENING
5 MILLION STRAY COWS ROAM IN THE STREETS OF INDIA
Hindus believe that cows are sacred animals. Yet high dairy consumption and leather industry cause 2 million cattle to amble in traffic-choked streets. Donors in India have sponsored a goshala, or cow shelter, to help cows that have been discarded by the dairy industry. Three cows and three goats are living there. Thanks to Madhuri, Ravi Tej, Mano, Akhila, Sudha and many more.
Aadi is our rescued cow who was hit by a vehicle and left lying on busy streets. His hernia couldn't be fixed, so he is now a permanent resident. We believe he was probably a byproduct of the dairy industry.
Sita the sheep was found hobbling along the busy streets with a broken leg. She's a non-milking goat that nobody wants, so she become our permanent resident. We believe her owner abandoned her when she was no longer needed.
CHAMPA STORY
Champa lost her front leg and entire family in train accident. After overcoming tragedy, she is now a beautiful girl with bright brown eyes, a stylish ear and perfect model pose. Rescued at 3 months old, tripod Champa is now 2 years old waiting for a home. She would bring a lot of joy to the home. In 2023, 12 Indian street dogs will make the journey to the USA. 4 have homes waiting, the other 8 are still searching for adopters.
Dhaara is waiting for a miracle
Without a snout, Dhaara has two strikes against her as stray dogs in India are highly discriminated against. This six-week-old pup was born on the streets and is missing her snout. Our shelter is full, and donations have significantly decreased in inflation times, we just couldn't say No.
2023 PLANS
In 2023, we hope to Increase sterilizations to 200 per month. Additionally, we want to expand the education program to include more schools. Lastly, to increase adoptions of Indian breed dogs.
We have man ADOPTABLE DOGS. Adopt a street dog, and witness a kinder side of you that you have never seen before. Desi dogs are born naturally, without breeder intervention. Their immunity is much better than a purebred due to no genetic issues.
