Update: Help Iraqi Children with Disabilities

By Qasim Alowaid/Roz Fuller | Founder/Co-Founder

HELP IRAQI CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES PROJECT.

Mainstream schools in Iraq have very negative attitudes towards children with disabilities. As a result, Iraqi children with disabilities have been excluded from mainstream education. These children are not treated equally and are not given the opportunity to study.

ICHOPE advocates for the rights and interests of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other disabilities, both physical and emotional. We endeavor to ensure that all children have access to educational services appropriate for their unique needs. We do this by providing Early Intervention Services, running a program for children who are without access to educational services, facilitating parent support groups, working with local education and health services programs, providing training, and facilitating access to appropriate information on mental health and autism.

We are currently helping 55 children who are suffering from mental health disabilities. Once a child is identified as being in need of help, we work with the family to ensure that the child is accurately diagnosed, treated and provided with appropriate ongoing services. These services include treatment from doctors, access to health centers, access to academic programs and support for family members.

These children are showing improvement and are beginning to enjoy learning. Their families benefit from gaining an understanding of their child's disability, from beginning to understand why their child doesn't respond as other children do, and from learning how to help their child in new ways.
