Guatemala is home to some of the world's most endangered wild animals and habitats. ARCAS rescues, rehabilitates and releases wild animals confiscated from traffickers. Some of these animals exist nowhere else in the world. It also protects forests, beaches and wetlands that these animals need to survive. This project will support the food and medical costs of animals undergoing rehabilitation and will help manage protected areas for wildlife in Peten, the Pacific coast and the highlands.
Illegal trafficking is decimating populations of wild animals throughout the world. The Maya Biosphere Reserve in the north of the country is the largest remaining forest area in Mesoamerica, and source of many of the wild animals trafficked in the region. On the Pacific coast, sea turtle and yellow-naped parrots are the target of traffickers. The government lacks the resources to fully implement wildlife laws, and ARCAS plays a crucial role in supporting them in enforcement activities.
ARCAS rescues and releases wild animals confiscated by government authorities from traffickers. It also works with the government to strengthen enforcement of wildlife laws, supporting patrols and strengthening legislation. This project will also sponsor nests to increase the numbers of sea turtle eggs rescued at the Hawaii Hatchery. ARCAS urgently needs to improve its rehab facilities at its central official and a portion of these funds will be used to build flight cages in Cerro Alux.
This project aims to conserve the biodiversity of Guatemala, preserving this rich legacy for future generations. It promotes ecotourism, birdwatching, handicrafts production and other sustainable ways to take advantage of this biodiversity without destroying it. Animal-based tourism is growing rapidly in Guatemala, and if managed correctly can offer a sustainable economic alternative for future generations. Protected areas provide vital environmental services and help mitigate climate change.
