Hoping not to jinx it, but 2025 has been a great year so far! Our close neighbours decided to sell their 4 acre land and together with our partners we managed to secure this mostly deforested and mismanaged area. It was previously deforested for a failed banana plantation. Thanks to our donors and our brilliant network of people we collected the cash and got the deal over the line within a few weeks. Nel and her team have wasted no time in restoring the lost forest!
The restoration project is a combination of using ecotourism and agriculture that will allow a financial income; continuing our philosophy of people and planet. Another 4 acres saved!
Bodhi Land (see photos) is also restoring itself and we are now planting a few trees to assist the process with the help of our guests.
Additionally, we have recently partnered with Action Change - a network of experts dedicated to supporting local communities and conservation organisations. We are currently in the discussion and planning phase but more news will follow soon!
One of the challenges has been finding a ground leader / coordinator on the ground. As myself, Emma and some of the others are currently abroad we are looking for someone to be active on the ground, supporting our restoring efforts and coordinating our research and community initiatives. Our belief is that a strong community relationship and working from within the forest is the key to understanding and telling the story of our Kandyan Forest Gardens. Until we find our Ground Leader, our brilliant volunteer, Karina has been busy on socials and spreading some news and updates from the jungle so keep following us for more updates!
