Project Report | Feb 18, 2021
Prosperous Omacha

By Maria Varela | Programme leader

Prosperous Omacha

Cusco, February 2021

Dear Donors

In these months we have continued to accompany the families of Omacha, we have adapted to the preventive measures before COVID-19. Our team of expert farmers and the families have reached agreements where we all contribute and are prosperous. COVID-19 will not stop us.

Today, more than ever, we believe in the organisational and associative potential of the families for the good of their communities. Under a spirit of companionship they have carried out wonderful, useful, productive and timely activities, in the circumstances that the world is going through at the moment and they especially, in areas so far away, remote and inaccessible. Here are some photos that beautifully reflect what we have been doing, vegetable gardens, guinea pig sheds, trout ponds, tending the grass, fixing our kitchens and caring for our nurseries.

Come and join us!!!

Tree donations to help impoverished families in Peru

This project seeks to lift 1096 families out of extreme poverty in Pichigua and Omacha in Cusco, through peer learning and healthy competition. The goal is to accelerate the recovery of degraded soils and vegetation while helping the villages, and the families living in them, to manage their natural resources in a sustainable manner.

In the community of Huillque-Omacha everyone participates in the construction and care of the guinea pig sheds.

The ideal place for the construction of a guinea pig house should be far away from noise, dust and noxious gases. The guinea pig is a very shy animal and needs peace and quiet.

Guinea pig meat has a high nutritional value, because it contains the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids required in human nutrition. The average protein content of guinea pig meat (19.49 %)

The families also tended to the cultivation of ryegrass, which is used for direct grazing, cover crops and erosion control, silage, hay and other crops.

The care and business of trout has also been present in Omacha's families.

In the community of Huasquillay-Omacha, the women have been improving their homes, making them healthy, especially in the kitchen with its oven and cupboards to keep their pots and cutlery clean and tidy.

The women put all their efforts into having their house nice, clean and tidy, with inlaid, painted and nicely designed walls.

Omacha is at an altitude of over 3800 metres above sea level, where the low temperatures make it practically impossible for vegetables to grow naturally. For this reason we have implemented the vegetable gardens with phyto-tents, which are very valuable and useful for the families, and even more so with the preventive measures of COVID-19, having a good diet is indispensable for the families.

During these months, the families have been very motivated with the construction and care of their vegetable gardens with phyto-tents, with the participation of mum, dad, children and grandparents. These vegetables and greens will help them to combat the high rates of child malnutrition and improve their nutrition.

The community of Chapina, doing work for the construction of nurseries and bagging, and then placing the seeds.

Always with smiles and good humour, thinking about their map of the future.

We will soon be sending you reports on the 2020-2021 Afforestation Campaign.

Our team of expert farmers was authorised to be with the communities, complying with the COVID-19 prevention protocol.

We are grateful to be in a situation that allows us to continue serving our community during this crisis.

¡Help us with your donation to Plant Prosperity!

BLESSINGS
