Over 200 schoolgirls in Tinkong, Eastern Region, miss 3-5 school days every month because they cannot afford sanitary pads. Without access to proper menstrual care, they resort to unsafe alternatives, risking infections and discomfort. Their frequent absences expose them to stigma from classmates, affecting their confidence and academic performance. This lack of access to sanitary pads contributes to gender inequality in education, limiting their opportunities for a brighter future.
United Way Ghana will provide 200 schoolgirls in Tinkong with a year's supply of sanitary pads, ensuring they can attend school consistently. Monthly distributions will be conducted in partnership with schools, and girls will sign upon receiving pads. Teachers will track attendance to assess the impact. In addition, the project will include menstrual health education, and set up a girls closet initiative in the schools to empower girls with knowledge on hygiene and self-care.
By providing 200 schoolgirls in Tinkong with consistent access to sanitary pads, this project will improve school attendance, leading to better academic performance and higher retention rates. As more girls complete their education, they will have greater opportunities for employment and financial independence. In the long term, this will help reduce gender disparities in education and empower future generations of women to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
