Spay Neuter India's 5000 Stray Dogs and Cats

India is home to an overwhelming population of nearly 80 million homeless dogs and cats. These stray animals are often perceived as nuisances and threats due to frequent bites and the spread of rabies. Without government-sponsored spay/neuter programs, many residential associations, businesses, and universities have resorted to inhumane methods such as catching, relocating, or poisoning stray animals to address this crisis.

Introduction to SAFI

Stray Animal Foundation India (SAFI) is dedicated to improving the lives of stray animals across India. Since its inception in 2020, SAFI has made significant strides in creating a better life for India's stray animals through comprehensive care, education, and advocacy. We have saved over 1,800 animals, spayed and neutered more than 1150 animals, and facilitated the adoption of over 150 dogs. Our mission is clear: To sterilize as many stray dogs as possible to curb overpopulation, reduce rabies deaths, and improve the perception of stray animals within communities.

In the middle of this crisis, Raheja Mindspace Hyderabad, one of the largest IT parks in Hyderabad, approached us with a request to sterilize the stray dogs on its 97-acre campus humanely. This project is a testament to their commitment to animal welfare and a significant step towards creating humane spaces across large campuses and residential areas in India.

SAFI’s approach to sterilizing Hyderabad’s Street Dogs and Cat project involves several key stages:

1.    Feeding and Familiarization: We work with neighbors to engage in daily feeding activities to build trust with stray dogs, which helps in humane catching.

2.    Humane Catching: Once the dogs become familiar with neighbors or our staff, we catch them humanely.

3.    Sterilization and Release: The dogs are sterilized in our well-equipped veterinary clinic and released back into their habitat.

This method has proved effective in ensuring the humane treatment of stray animals while achieving the necessary outcome of population control.

Objectives and Outcomes

Our SMART objectives for this project are:

1. Sterilize 150 stray dogs on the Mindspace Hyderabad campus within 6 months.

2. Increase awareness among businesses and residential complexes about humane methods of animal population control.

3. Reduce rabies cases and dog bite incidents in the Mindspace Hyderabad campus by 50% within 12 months of project completion.

Progress

- Since April 2024, we have sterilized around 98 dogs.

- 30 dogs are fed each day.

- 60 sterilizations planned in next 2-3 months.

 Budget and Financial Plan

It costs $33,000 to support the Mindspace Hyderabad project, broken down as follows:

- Dog Catchers: $10 per trip, 200 trips per year - $2,000 

- Transportation: $5 per trip, 200 trips per year - $1,000 

- Sterilization: $50 per animal, 150 animals - $7,500 

- Feeding: $1 per day per dog for familiarization, 150 dogs for 30 days - $4,500 

- Miscellaneous Expenses: Medical supplies, administrative costs - $18,000 

This budget will ensure the successful sterilization of stray dogs on the Mindspace Hyderabad campus and serve as a model for other business complexes to follow.

 Sustainability and Future Plans

Our long-term vision includes the expansion of this program to other IT parks, universities, and residential complexes. The sustainability of our programs is assured through:

- Building strong partnerships with local veterinary hospitals.

- Community support and involvement in humane animal welfare practices.

- Continuous education and awareness campaigns about responsible pet ownership and the benefits of sterilization.
