I am happy to report that, despite a slow down in water testing earlier in the year and challenges caused by extreme flooding in Niger, we have been able to get many new taps up and running. These taps are now providing instant, running water to thousands of people in rural villages across Niger.

It’s hard to overstate the transformative impact of these taps. Death and disease caused by contaminated water has been eliminated; and because they no longer have to walk for water, the girls in these villages can stay in school, and their mothers are free to pursue income-generating work. This is all thanks to your generosity and the generosity of others like you. Included in this report are photos of a few of our newest taps.

As is so often the case when working in rural, high-needs areas, we have good news and bad news. The good news is that our operations in the field have continued as normal - wells are being drilled, sanitation and hygiene instruction is occuring, and any necessary maintenance to water systems is being carried out. The challenge is that the many government services in Niger have not been as quick to recover from last summer's coup, and as a result, we are experiencing some delays in making our new taps operational. 

Obviously, it is essential that we ensure that the water that flows from the taps we provide is safe and free of any harmful contaminants or dangerous levels of certain minerals. Since water quality tests are the responsibilit of the government, our team on the ground is at the mercy of Niger's Ministry of Hydrology. The boreholes for all of our recently funded taps have been drilled, and solar panels have been purchased, but we cannot begin construction until we receive the water quality results from the government. 

Fortunately, the reports that we are receiving indicate that the testing backlog has nearly been cleared. We anticipate receiving tap reports and photos of around 30 new taps within the next six weeks.
