Creating Opportunity One Stove at a Time

By Kimberly Lagomarsino | Director of Programs, Latin America

Ever wonder why we get so jazzed about stoves?  It's because every stove represents an important opportunity. Yes, every single stove

Each stove we are able to install is one more opportunity to:

  • Partner with a family or a school and help them understand how to put children's health first in a very tangible way. This means watching smiles emerge on beneficiaries faces the first time they cook fresh tortillas and their home doesn't immediately fill up with smoke. It also means visiting homes and observing significant reductions in coughing and wheezing and no new burns on skin.
  • Alleviate financial and time burdens immediately. Less time and money spent collecting wood for cooking because new stoves mean women and girls have more time to participate in positive new activities including: learning, income generation and socializing with one another.
  • Improve nutrition. Staple food items, diet, traditions and cooking methods are deeply woven together.  Women show us every day how passionate they are about these topics and by acknowledging these areas as interrelated we are seeing progress in improving household nutrition.
  • Reduce environmental degradation. Communities communicate with us how much they want to preserve and improve their environments. More efficient stoves help us to do this by preventing rapid deforestation of areas that are vulnerable and plagued by mudslides, droughts, contaminated water sources; etc.

Every stove you help us build counts in a big way. It is an opportunity for a better day and a better life for a child, a mother, a family, a community.
