Here is a short story about one family who received a Safe Cookstove from HRI: Javier and Katherine have five children ranging from age 7 to 15 years old. They have a very complicated economic situation, even before the covid pandemic shut down the country of Guatemala. Katherine tries to sell Wood on the streets when possible and Javier works as a lumberjack, Farmer, guard and doing masonry work – truly he takes whatever work he can get. Even still, they depend mostly on handouts and donations just to get by. Their home is made of scraps pieced together from whatever they could find. Their stove is an open fire which is a great danger to the children especially. Katherine requires a special diet because she had open heart surgery less than a year ago. She has to take medication the rest of her life. Because of this, the main diet for the rest of the family consists of eating tortillas with butter and homegrown herbs just once or twice a day. Thanks to our generous partners, HRI was able to not only provide food supplies to this family, but we also installed a brand new safe cookstove to create a safer and healthier environment for the family.
