We are excited to report that we met our first goal and raised $10,000 towards phase 1 of supplying the village of El Rodeito with a water filtration, storage, and delivery system.
Phase 1 has two parts: immediate filters and an engineering site survey. First, we are partnering with the nonprofit “Water with Blessings” (waterwithblessings.org) to provide Sawyer Zone 1 water filters plus lifetime support and training. On average, every four homes will share one filter. Immediately, the hamlets to receive filters are El Rodeito and Rio Las Canas. They are scheduled for delivery at the end of November or early December 2020. The filters will eliminate all the waterborne parasites, so this is a good first step. No portable filter can eliminate pesticides, carcinogens and heavy metals, so those toxins will be addressed in Phase II with the water treatment facility.
We sent a deposit to Water with Blessings to pay for water filters and provide training to the water mothers. The deposit allows us to secure a spot on their schedule and secure filters for El Rodeito and Rio las Canas. We will be providing filters to other hamlets in 2021. We are still raising money for the other hamlets in our next round of fundraising. If you are interested, a filter costs $75. It will have an instant impact in the hamlets below:
We sent a deposit to the engineering team led by Elvis Flores. They are about to get started with the surveying and evaluation of water sources for the village. The team will survey the homes, terrain, and elevations to allow for the proper planning of the infrastructure, i.e. the best method of transport, filtration, storage, and delivery. Once we have that information, we will raise the funds required by the survey to build the treatment plant and connections to homes.
Access to clean water has been made a priority of our organization's effort in Honduras during Covid because of its paramount importance for the local communities. Thank you for your donations and support as well as continuing to share our work! Together we can go much further and have a much greater impact.
While water is an urgent priority, Mayor Potencial has been very busy with other projects. We’d love to share those with you briefly. To learn more about our projects or our organization please visit our website at: www.mayorpotencial.org
Prenatal Vitamins Project
Among the underserved groups in rural communities in Honduras, pregnant women are the most vulnerable due to a lack of access to food in general, let alone nutrients and vitamins necessary for a healthy pregnancy. Many local pregnant women are at risk for premature birth and labor complications.
We are collaborating with CapeCares to deliver prenatal vitamins to all the pregnant women in the region to help improve their health and the health of future generations in Honduras.
Medication Relief Project
Among the many devastating impacts that Covid-19 has caused is lack of access to much needed medication. Diabetes, hypertension, heart conditions are among the most common major health problems these villagers suffer from. Because of the lockdown in Honduras, the last medical delivery was in February 2020, which provided medication for three months.
There are currently 30 people in this village that are in dire need of their medications. Based on their prescriptions provided by the doctor that has treated them, a two month supply of the medications will cost $4,125. We are now only $800 short of the total amount. We completed the first delivery this month and we expect to complete fundraising for this project in time to send the second month supply of medications in November.
Food Security Project
We are working with Knights of Malta to secure food distribution to the southern part of Honduras, totalling 249 families. In addition, we are partnering with CapeCares to establish the Edesia nutritional bar program to help extremely malnourished children regain their strength and health. It will benefit children from 6 - 24 months old as well as pregnant mothers. We will be raising funds to provide much needed dry food boxes for every family for November.
As a reminder our organization is 100% volunteer run and our board members cover our administrative expenses (other than online donation fees) so your donation goes further! If you are interested in joining us please reach out to us at hello@mayorpotencial.org
