Shamas Rugby Foundation engage children aged 6 to 18 from informal settlements in Nairobi and Kiambu County, educating them about climate action and sustainability through the sport of rugby. Project aims to equip students with vital knowledge on climate science, practical skills, and proactive attitudes toward the environment. Exploring the complexities of climate change, students will be empowered to think critically about sustainability and their contributions to fostering a healthier planet
A significant number of young people, in rural and informal settlements, lack access to quality education on environmental and sustainability issues. Communities' lack of climate literacy hinders their resilience and adaptability to environmental changes. Without a strong foundation in climate action and sustainability, the next generation will struggle to tackle the effects of climate change and implement adaptive practices.
This initiative seeks to incorporate climate change education into school curricula, particularly in science and social studies, and in teacher training. It empowers students to lead sustainability efforts in their communities and promotes a holistic understanding of climate-related themes. The program encourages students to take action through personal lifestyle changes and participation in local sustainability projects.
By fostering long-term behavior changes and increasing awareness and understanding through improved student climate literacy, we are shaping future leaders within their communities. These leaders will be equipped to make informed decisions, think critically, and enhance climate literacy in their communities, ultimately contributing to a healthier planet.
