As members of the International Business Internship Program, Sydney, Afrika, Catie, Eleanor, Ellen, Grace, and Athena work weekly to help our business partner, the Shifa Royal Hospital, in their medical records and hygiene department. The hospital is located in Bauchi State, Nigeria and we are working towards finding solutions that will make the department more efficient and allow the hospital to run more smoothly.
In the Records Department of the hospital, there is no computer system to quickly access files and no one is trained with a system of that sort. People instead have a card with their medical information, but if people don't have their card, it takes a long time to find information about their medical history. In emergencies, doctors are not able to find information about patients' prescriptions, allergies, etc.
The money earned will go to the hospital and allow them to buy a computer to store medical records online. This way, there will be no hassle of trying to find medical history physically and patients will be able to track their information in the event of an emergency. If a patient were to run into the hospital and needed help right away, for instance, the workers could look them up in the system quickly and see possible allergies or previous illnesses.
In the long run, money raised will allow the hospital to buy a computer system and other supplies necessary to making the Records Department more efficient. This will help patients throughout their entire lives, because if a patient were to come in one year and needed treatment years later, their history would still be on file. This way, the doctors will be able to see if there is something that may have caused this and how to possible treat the condition.
