It is our mission at World Animal Protection to end the illegal practice of keeping bears in private and cruel captive conditions and ensure the lifetime care of those bears. You can help support the bears in the Libearty bear sanctuary!
Romania once had a serious problem with bears being kept illegally by private individuals in cruel conditions - caged near homes, restaurants and gas stations. Others were trapped in run-down zoos, often neglected in inadequate enclosures. It was clear that, if all the captive bears were to be re-homed, a new place was needed. The solution was to build a sanctuary, in a protected wild environment, where these bears could be kept safely for the rest of their lives.
World Animal Protection and Asociatia Milioane de Prieteni (AMP) started to build what was to become Europe's largest bear sanctuary in 2005. Libearty Bear Sanctuary is based in the oak forests of Zarnesti, Romania, and provides a safe haven for rescued bears to live naturally. There are now more than 100 bears living a natural life in the sanctuary - finally safe and free to be bears once more.
We have been supporting AMP in its goal to eradicate the cultural tradition of keeping bears for private or entertainment purposes in Romania. We will continue to do so until the bear sanctuary is able to manage a sustainable income to cover its running costs. We will also continue to support them by providing a proportion of the bear sanctuary's running costs. Please help us ensure bears can now have freedom and the best food and veterinarian care for their remaining years in the sanctuary.
