Dear Friend,
This is just a quick note to let you know that the parrot nesting season has officially begun. The birds have been roosting in large groups in tall trees near the coast and there are raucous conversations going on between the birds discussing family and their future. This is a joyous sight and sound because just fifteen years ago, there were not enough parrots for them to do this roosting behaviour.
Next, the birds will go with their pair to select a nest site. To prepare for this moment, our parrot technicians are checking on recently active nests to check for nesting activity. We will also clean out nest boxes and replace damaged ones so that the maximum number of nesting cavities are available for the birds.
Then, we will restart outreach to community members, letting them know that if they protect a nest, we will reward them with an incentive payment. As soon as community members and our technicians identify nesting behaviours and active nests, we will get to work protecting the nests with frequent patrols and nesting data collection.
All this is possible thanks to you.
Thank you for supporting this important program. Your are helping this critically endangered parrot to survive as a species.
Sincerely,
Sarah Otterstrom
