English translation: "We feel proud of ourselves because of this project and we promise that we will make the effort to make this project sustainable so that it remains a source of financing for all of us in the organization.
It is a true reinforced fund that helps us fight hunger that is pervasive today, it helps us face the rising cost of living. The microcredit support us and our families; it is an activity that shows concrete result. so said the women of AFESKA.
AFESKA, the women organization started its fund for women with 50 small loans of HDG10,000.00 (Haitian gourdes) for 50 women. Today it has benefitted 164 women since its inception. The responsibility and committment of participants is reflected in their statement. They are examplary in the timeliness of their reimbursement and the paiement of their 2% interest. Lateness has not surpassed 3 days. Today the fund balance, that is revolving in new credit contracts on a monthly basis, has grown from HDG 500,000.00 to HDG 820,220.00.
The women are focussed on the local market, meeting the needs of the people in the locality they serve. Their primary activity is the retail sale of agricultural product based on what is grown in the area and the harvest. When there is rarity in a local production, they also travel and reinforce the market. For example: in the season when they harvest sugar cane, the women invest in cane syrup produced locally and bring their syrup to market from beyond the parameters of their respective community. But during the beginning of the school, they are the ones who sell the school supplies. They also invest in the sale of fresh meat mostly goat, pig and sheep and the sale of product of first necessity like soap, oil. As we are talking today, mango are in harvest and it is the product that is most profitable for resale across the country.
