This spring, volunteers worked on improving the Pollinator Garden at the Miguel Alemán Restoration Site under the guidance of Selenne Y., M.A. in Landscape Architecture from the University of Arizona, and the Nursery, Biological Monitoring, and Community Involvement team of Pronatura Noroeste.
The Miguel Alemán Restoration Site is located in the border zone of the Colorado River, specifically in the Mexicali Valley, adjacent to Arizona in the United States. Volunteers from San Luis Río Colorado and Mexicali, cities that depend on the Colorado River for water, participated in the program.
During the first session of the 2024 volunteer program, activities included training on how to build a Pollinator Garden, guided by Selenne Y. Volunteers also delimited the interpretive trail and supported the weeding of non-native plants, such as butcher's weed and Russian thistle, exotic species introduced to Mexico.
In the second session, volunteers continued learning about pollinator gardens and participated in reforestation efforts with native plants from the Sonoran Desert region.
The plants chosen for reforestation align with the Forestation Guide of Mexicali's Municipality (2020), species like the Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis), Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa), Baja Fairy Duster (Calliandra californica), and Wild Petunia (Ruellia californica). Additionally, the trail was marked where Cosmos flowers (Dieteria asteroides) are abundant, alongside Redberry Desert-Thorns (Lycium andersonii), Desert Marigolds (Baileya multiradiata), Mexican Palo Verdes (Parkinsonia aculeata), Blue Palo Verdes (Parkinsonia florida), Yellow paloverdes (Parkinsonia microphylla), Screwbean Mesquites (Strombocarpa pubescens), and Honey Mesquites (Neltuma glandulosa).
Thanks to your support through GlobalGiving, we are building connections that bring communities closer to the restored spaces of the Colorado River. Interaction with these forests fosters social and health well-being for the communities that visit nature.
