Did you know that roosters crow all day long, not just in the early morning? For these descendants of forest denizens, crowing evolved as a way to keep track of each other across distance despite dense foliage. A "cock-a-doodle-doo!" means "all OK over here!"
Here at VINE, we hear crowing all day long, from sunrise until sunset. Roosters in residence at the sanctuary include survivors of the poultry and egg industries, survivors of cockfighting, and birds discarded by people who keep backyard hens for their eggs.
We've got something to crow about ourselves today: We just recieved word that VINE will be receiving a Spirit of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) award from our state government, in honor of our record of hiring, training, and retraining people with disabilities. That's what we want to be: a sanctuary that is a safe place for everybody!
As for The Rooster Project, the big focus in recent months has been getting The Rooster Book ready for publication. As you may recall, this book was initially planned as merely a manual for other sanctuaries. Then, we decided to add chapters for the general public, dispelling myths about roosters and telling the truth about these amazing birds. To make it even more accessible and engaging, we solicited stories about individual roosters from other sanctuaries and individual rooster rescuers to break up the text. We got so many that it shook up our plans, but in a good way. While the publication date has been delayed from last spring until this fall, we know that it will be worth the wait!
If you're looking for something to read while waiting for The Rooster Book to be ready, you might want to check out BIrd's-Eye Views, published by VINE Press, which includes numerous essays -- many of them featuring roosters! -- written from the grounds of the sanctuary. You can see chapter listings here.
Thank you again for your support of The Rooster Project and the roosters here at VINE Sanctuary!
