November 2022: 6 new monkeys rescued thanks to you

In September 2022, the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary welcomed six new arrivals: Archie, Ricky, Louie, Bernie Macq, Poppy, and Max. The six monkeys – three vervet monkeys and three bonnet macaques respectively – had all been kept as pets for more than 12 years.

Most were overweight, all had had their canine teeth pulled out to prevent them from biting their former owner, and some of them were showing clinical signs of compounded stress from their long years in inadequate conditions. Thankfully, their owner chose to do the right thing and surrendered them into our expert care.

Since they arrived, the six monkeys have settled happily into their new home – enjoying their complex and spacious enclosures and getting to know their new caregivers. In the coming months, we hope they all will be introduced into pre-existing social groups in our large open-top enclosures. Thanks to your donations, we will be able to provide lifetime care for these six monkeys to live out their days in a suitable home.

We take great pride in working with victims of the pet trade to offer them the chance to live with more freedom and autonomy, but we recognize that even the best sanctuaries cannot give these innocent animals the live they truly deserve. For that reason, we continue to work hard to see the introduction of the Captive Primate Safety Act, which would ban private ownership of primates in the U.S.

It is vital that, while providing the best possible care for its victims, we continue to target the trade itself and work to bring it to an end once and for all.
