Awrad-Clown Me In spreads laughter, fights inequality and heals through the power of performing arts. Our artistic relief work aims to help people overcome the traumas caused by the very hard social and financial conditions in Lebanon. We reach people in remote areas, refugee camps, and underprivileged suburbs.
Rage, trauma, and despair have become a part of daily life in Lebanon. 2020 was a year that turned the lives of Lebanese and residents of Lebanon upside down: a severe economic and financial crisis, a destructive blast in Beirut, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation is disastrous amid a total absence of reforms or counter-measures. People lack spaces for free expression and are uncertain about their futures. Families face enormous challenges financially and psychologically.
We believe that all people, regardless of their background and age, deserve to have access to the healing powers of arts, laughter, and play. We want people to laugh, to turn wounds into strengths, and to have moments of joy that we are all lacking. Our workshops and performances create safe and playful environments, tackle difficult social issues, and provide art therapy and capacity building that empower people.
Our vision is to democratize art and utilize it to solve social challenges in Lebanon and abroad. On top of our reach, we have our training school "the Institute for Very Very Serious Studies", where we develop the talents of emerging artists and send them out to train young people in their communities and to create interventions that tackle the local challenges. We aim to have more people well trained in using performing art and social group therapy to deal with serious social injustices.
