The number of children with hearing loss is increasing every year. According to World Health Organization, hearing loss is world’s third most common pathology, and by the year 2020 the number of children with hearing loss will increase by 30%.
In developed countries hearing diagnostics for newborns is a standard practice. Ukraine currently is not following this practice. An early diagnosis could potentially prevent permanent hearing loss. Our Project, aside from organization of rehabilitation camps for children after cochlear implant surgery, aims to implement hearing diagnostics for newborns as a required procedure recognized by the state. Our proposal titled “The Concept of Early Diagnosis of Hearing Problems”, was put forth for consideration by the Ukrainian Ministry of Health.
At present our organization is preparing for our next rehabilitation camp scheduled to take place in September. 25 more children, who have gone through cochlear implant surgery, will have the opportunity to receive help from qualified specialists.
Sasha and Lena completed their rehabilitation in March of this year. Now Sasha already knows the colors of the surrounding objects, which he first learned about during his time at the camp. “Every walk outside is the opportunity for Sasha to practice new words: “green leaf”, “blue sky”, “bright sun”, - says his mother.
Lena’s kindergarten teachers, noticed that she became more talkative and has new friends to play, read poems, and sing songs with. Every success of our little patients makes us want to try harder to help these children live happier and healthier lives.
