During the past quarter BridgIT Water Foundation has refurbished two water wells in the Mukono District of Central Uganda. These wells are located in Nalubabwe Village and Bukasa Village, and serve 1,182 and 1,002 people respectively.
The wells were constructed many years ago and were not properly maintained. It is not unusual for parts to fail, such as pumps or metal pipes, but without proper management such as a Water User Committee (WUC) and a maintenance fund, it is often not feasible for the villagers to repair the wells. Without water in the village, the women and children are forced to walk great distances to collect often contaminated water.
Besides repairing these wells, BridgIT Water Foundation and its implementing partner Suubi Community Projects Uganda, established a Water User Committee in each village and trained the teams to manage this resource. The WUCs will build up a maintenance fund with modest water user fees, such that wells can be repaired in the future.
BridgIT sends a big thank you to the Caplan Family and the Homstad Family for their generous contributions that allowed us to complete these two projects.
BridgIT Water Foundation will hold a 2021 Uganda Refurb Wells Year-End Fundraising Campaign. Matching funds will multiply your contribution to help us bring safe, clean water to the people. Please join this effort so we can refurb more rural Ugandan water wells in 2022. Thank you!
