Recently, Reef Check Malaysia and members of the Tioman Marine Conservation Group joined the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, Pahang to monitor biodiversity at some diving sites around Tioman Island. The aim of the monitoring programme is to look at some key indicators to compare the health of coral reefs between busy diving sites and diving sites that are more secluded and less frequented by divers.
Substrate cover, types of corals, reef fish and invertebrates, as well as human impacts were measured. The monitoring method was developed by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu and Department of Fisheries to monitor diving sites within Marine Parks around the country.
