Recently, a group of six youths from Mantanani Island were given training on coral and turtle conservation. They were taught on subjects such as importance, types and threats faced by coral reefs and turtles as well as ways of conserving and protecting them. The youth were also given hands-on experience and training on methods to rehabilitate coral reefs.
Tourism is the main source of income for these islanders and coral reefs are the main attraction. Turtles are often sighted on Mantanani Island and nest on the island. It is hope that this training not only increases the youths’ knowledge and awareness but also instil pride and responsibility to take care of their natural heritage.
