2020, A Growing Year for Us All

We hope you are enjoying a safe and merry holiday this season. It's hard to believe we are already at the end of the year!

2020 has been a growing year for us at Reef Check Malaysia, from supporting local island communities through economic recovery and waste management programs, witnessing signs of the community taking their own steps in conservation, to joining forces with amazing groups in working towards a healthier community and the ocean.

We would like to honour the wins that we were able to achieve together. Here are some of our community and conservation successes this year:

201 sites surveyed in our annual Reef Check survey programme which involved 64 volunteers
11 tonnes of trash collected across Malaysia during International Coastal Cleanup, covering 70 beaches and participated by 3500 volunteers
24 ghost nets weighing a total of 2780kg was removed by our team alongside local groups and organizations on Tioman Island
7 hotels and resorts were assessed using the ASEAN Green Hotels Standard on Tioman Island
A new funded economy recovery programme supporting the local community on Mantanani Island through the production and sales of Virgin Coconut Oil
Growth of a waste management programme on Mantanani Island which now involves 150 houses
Certified 20 locals as Eco-friendly Snorkel Guides

All of these successes would not have happened without our amazing team, local stakeholders, government agencies, and the community. But ultimately, we simply could not have done this without you. Thank you for believing in the power of ocean conservation and for being a part of our journey in Reef Check Malaysia.

We are really looking forward to doing more next year! It will be a long journey and we hope you will continue to stand ready with us in protecting our oceans from now to generations to come. Together we can do extraordinary things.
