Recently, Reef Check Malaysia conducted Waste Management Program for residents of Kampung Padang in Mantanani Island. A total of 90 houses and 497 households participated in the programme. The aim of the programme is to raise the awareness amongst the residents on environment issues, particularly waste management.
Reef Check Malaysia provided bins for the locals to segregate their waste – food waste and recyclable items. Waste will be collected from houses and weighed. Some of the challenges faced by us are unpredictable weather conditions which slow down waste collection efforts. Some of the residents still mix their wastes and a small number of the residents pulled out from the programme. Fear not, we will continue to encourage them to segregate their wastes and continue to join the programme.
Despite these challenges, the amount of litters found along the beach has reduced significantly. As a result, we will include another 60 houses in this programme in the coming month.
