Among these children is Khalil, who lives with his mother and sister in one of these makeshift camps. His mother works tirelessly as a seamstress, doing her best to provide for her children despite the lack of resources and irregular work opportunities. But the hardships remain overwhelming.

Despite these challenges, Khalil carries a big dream. He loves to draw and aspires to become an art teacher one day. In his free time, he holds his simple pencils and sketches on any paper he can find, expressing his dreams and hopes through art—despite the harsh reality he faces.

The holy month of Ramadan has returned to thousands of displaced families in northern Syria amid dire humanitarian conditions. As poverty, displacement, and food shortages persist, children, widows, and the elderly struggle daily to survive in makeshift camps that lack the most basic necessities of life.

During our team’s visit to the outskirts of Suran, where random shelters are built with brick walls and covered with fabric sheets, we encountered one of the most heartbreaking stories—the story of the two orphaned brothers, Samer and Wahid, who lost both their parents in a single day.

A Tragic Loss
Wahid’s father was battling cancer, and due to extreme poverty, Samer and Wahid’s parents had to travel to Aleppo for medical treatment at a public hospital. However, since that day, they have completely disappeared. Even after the fall of the regime and the release of prisoners, there was no trace of them. Left without their parents, the two children now face life alone, with no caregiver except their elderly grandmother, who is also struggling with severe illnesses.

A Young Boy Bearing Heavy Responsibilities
As the older brother, Samer has taken on the responsibility of providing for his younger sibling and their ailing grandmother. He works long hours at a small grocery store for a meager wage that barely covers their basic needs.
