Thank you to all donors through GlobalGiving who gave us a chance to inspire a love of reading for Indonesian children! Our 2011 budget has been fully funded because with the help of YUM’s friends, colleagues and society through GlobalGiving.
It’s almost a year GlobalGiving has helped us in making reading a daily activity in this West Java community. Every day after school, children come to the library to play, read, discuss, learn how to use a computer, etc. We also help their homework and even help the children to join competitions. We helped one of our library members to send his drawing to a children’s magazine and other library member to join a Competition of General Knowledge and English and she won third place in this competition with the help of our librarian. We really proud that our children can make such improvements!
We are also proud to announce that our library has started a Library Internship Program for high school students in Cipanas who want to help us manage the implementation of our lending system and library membership cards, because more and more visitors come to borrow books. At this time, we record more than 1,000 visitors every month of whom more than 150 children have become library members. Currently, 3,846 books are available in the library. What an amazing progress in an area which lacked books!
Moreover, The Box of Books service has been launched. We cooperate with 2 schools in the area, to help the school increase their books collection. Every month, we drop a box of some 50 books and exchange it every month with a new box. The students are very happy because until now their library had very few books. We will also train the school to manage their own library, such as how to start a lending system, how to make an appealing displays of books so they can improve their library services.
The above progress shows that it is very important to continue these services to children in our community and we hope you will support us further. We still need your help to regularly upgrade our books collection and creative materials for children, and retain the services of a part-time librarian, etc. Your generosity has helped the community in Cipanas to improve their quality of life.
