First of all, YUM is very excited to announce that we are now a member of the Clinton Global Initiative! Established in 2005 by President Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) convenes global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the wolrd’s most pressing challenges.
Now, for exciting library news: YUM has implemented a new lending system and library membership card at our library! This is the first time that our community will be able to borrow books and read them at home.
YUM is consistently working to improve its Community Library to meet the growing needs of the dynamic community that it serves. On average, over 1,000 children and young adults visit the library monthly, including preschoolers and at least five local schools. The children are excited and eager to learn, therefore, creative and interesting activities continue to be organized and facilitated by YUM staff. These activities include storytelling, reading aloud, drawing and English Club. A glass of milk is provided weekly for each child who participates in these events.
Our librarian, Ardiyanto Suntoro, has implemented a new database, which categorizes the entire collection of books by genre and age. This enables less relevant texts to be donated elsewhere, where they will be utilized better. Ardiyanto has also documented all of the books that have been donated to the library. During a recent event at YUM Village, students from the Jakarta International School painted the library bookshelves vibrant yellow and orange! The library furniture will soon be rearranged and additional reading lamps will be installed.
All of this has been made possible by the support of GlobalGiving, YUM friends, and supporters! Thank you so much to those who have supported this project. You have helped to bring positive change through education! We look forward to touching many lives in our work here at YUM Village!
