Parents of deaf children often lack sign language and learn to communicate with their children by attending preschool at Nzeve with them.
Reading is crucial for early childhood development and it is an amazing way for improving communication between a deaf child and their parent. As the parents spend time reading with their deaf child, they explore new signs and learn to engage with the child in different ways. This helps the parents to better understand the needs of their child as they learn various ways their child expresses themselves.
One mother said, “At first reading with my child was difficult, because I couldn’t verbally explain things to him. The more time we spent going through books, I now feel better about asking questions about the books. Reading also gives us many stories to talk about at home.”.
