“The livestock provided by PRIDE India helped me stabilize my economic status. Now I can raise my children without anyone’s support.”
Kamal* came to the community care centre(CCC) for People affected by HIV (PLHIV), in the hope to access better healthcare services. Her husband succumbed to the HIV infection 10 years ago, leaving her in extremely difficult situation. She is a mother of two, with one of her children being HIV positive.
Her 13 year old girl was enrolled in the nutritional diet programme in our hospital. Kamal* was provided a pregnant goat with the hopes of enabling her to become financially independent and encourage her in starting up her own goatery business. Additionaly, goat’s milk is also known for its high nutritional value through which she can provide supplementary nutrition to her girl child. The daughter is no more on nutrition support as she is consuming goat milk which has helped her CD4 count to increase to 2183 now from 1439 in last year. Today she is the owner of 3 goats with a livestock value of over Rs.27000 and the goat is ready to bear kids again. In future she plans to get regular income through sale of goats. Kamal is thankful for providing her opportunities in helping her becoming financially independent.
The Livelihood support programme for PLHIV’s seeks to build the capacities of the affected individuals, by helping them acquire skill sets for financial self-sustainability. They are provided financial support and training in goat farming, poultry and tailoring business which are popular and common vocations that people in the area engage in. Since the start of the programme a total of 45 individuals have been given livelihood support to start small enterprises.
