Nantare Primary school is located about 5 miles from Lake Victoria and serves a large community of mainly subsistence farmers and fisher men. The school has over 1000 pupils aged 7-14. Many walk long distances to get to the school – often with little to eat.
As part of our effort to help the school develop unused land around the school into minifarms to grow crops for the children to have something to eat at school, we partnered with local farmers 5 years ago.
The development of minifarms helped the pupils to learn sustainable farming and also provided them with breakfast three times a week.
When we visited the school in January 2020, we were delighted to see the enthusiasm and commitment of the pupils and the staff. However, they highlighted to us the problem of water shortage in the summer months.
At their request and in consultation with the water department of the local government we agreed to fund the construction of a well.
This project has now been completed and our local contacts have sent us a report.
I want to say a huge thank you to our donors on behalf of the pupils of Nantare.
There are seven schools where this type of sustainable farming projects are running helping altogether some 7000 pupils. We have agreed to upscale the programme to 4 more schools. If you would like to know more about our work on the island of Ukerewe in Lake Victoria please contact me.
